February is Black History Month: we will be honoring some important dates in black history: 2/19/1927: the birth of Leontyne Price, world renowned opera singer.

Students - Deliveries of food, money, clothing, other personal items (including books and homework), balloons, flowers or gifts will NOT be accepted. Do not ask your parents to bring forgotten items to school. Please be sure to come to school prepared.

Please help Haiti earthquake victims. Donate CHILDREN'S SHOES for a shoe drive sponsored by Soles of Our Children. Place donated children shoes that are in good condition in the bin located in Activities Office. Donations will be accepted until 2/19.

Job Shadow day is coming soon. Spend a day with the Torrance Police, Fire Department or City Attorney. Check out a medical lab, animal shelter and a few other places. The event is open to Juniors and Seniors, space is limited. You must be academically eligible and willing to spend the day observing a working professional. You even get a free lunch! Stop by the Career Center (A111) at lunch for more information and sign-ups.

Juniors & Seniors: Teens and Police Class starts March 9th - 2 ½ credit class from 6 - 8 pm at TPD station. See your counselor or come to the Principal's office to sign up. Only a few seats available.

The senior class will be having a Valentine's raffle. Buy a ticket from a Senior Class Council member or Mrs. Gasset, rm. A203 for only $1. Feb. 1st-12th. Grand prize is worth over $100. Winner will be announced at the rally on Feb. 12th or lunch.

Grad Night tickets will be on sale in front of the main gym every other Friday, so come see us this Friday, 2/5. Grad Nite will be a Mardi Gras theme. Tickets are $100 each until 5/28/2010. Financial Aid updates: Deadline for FAFSA & Cal Grants is 3/2 for UC, CSU and community colleges in CA.

Cal Grant: The school district released the Cal Grant information to the state this week. You should be able to check on whether your information has been received and is correct beginning on Tuesday, 2/9 but only if you have already sent in your FAFSA. Remember! You will not receive a Cal Grant without filing your FAFSA! Cal Grant website: https://mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov/logon.asp FAFSA website: www.fafsa.ed.gov/

A Summer Fellowship Program is available for seniors (Class of 2010) in the biomedical field. If you are selected, you would be working in biomedical research laboratories, assisting with research in areas such as: biochemistry, cancer, cardiovascular, computers in biomed science to mention a few. The dates of the fellowship (internship) are 6/21-8/13 and there is a stipend for it. The deadline to apply is March 12th. For more info visit: www.labiomed.org

Torrance Memorial Medical Center is offering scholarships to students pursuing careers in nursing, pharmacy, and allied health professions. Please visit their website at www.torrancememorial.org to apply.

The Torrance Craftmen's Guild is offering scholarships for students interested in arts and crafts. Seniors who are skilled in the area of arts and crafts should contact Mrs. Golia, counseling office, for applications and details. Deadline is 4/1/2010.

SCCTA Charitable Foundation offers the Lee Brennan Memorial College Scholarship for graduating seniors. For more information and to apply, visit www.sccta.org. Applications are due by Friday, March 12th.

Please be sure to issue them a pass & give them 2 originals to copy (25+). Students are not allowed to use the regular copier machine at this time.
