Don't Call Me Ishmael
Michael Gerard Bauer
Because of his
"wussy-crap" name, fourteen-year-old
Ishmael has to endure an amazing amount of
teasin. His response is to try to make
himself invisible. Then along comes a
strange new classmate-the frail James
Scobie. Ishmael ashamedly rejoices that
he'll no longer be the number-one bullying
target now that the slightly offbeat James
has arrived. But James faces up to his
persecutors without fear. Having recovered
from an operation, James informs Ishamael
that brain tumors are more frightening
than bullies. While Ishmael and James are
never totally free of bullies, they adopt
techniques that eventually allow Ishmael
to finally stand up for himself and his
friends.
The Book of the Week is
available for checkout at the library
circulation desk.
